Startup density in Europe: it’s far from a revolution

If you know a startup founder in Europe consider yourself lucky. It’s a rare species.

There are around 8,000 lynxes in continental Europe, a reason for World Conservation Union to put the  small predator on its list of species of interest. And there are 10,015 tech startups in European Union’s 28 countries. We counted them on Angel List, one of the most popular startup-profiles service. What do the statistics are saying?

In the first place, Europe is so far behind United States that we decided to concentrate strictly on the countries of European Union. For each 50,000 people population, you have only one tech startup with profile on Angel.co in Europe. There are 6 in United States.

You can check the numbers for your country in the interactive chart we compiled that tells two things: how many startups in each country and what tech startup density each country has when considering its population. The latter sheet is a quantitative value that gives a clear image of a certain country in terms of startup ecosystem.

3352, the number of startups in UK

At an EU28 level, you can find 27.77 startups for each 1 million people population. This puts Sweden in the median position with its 29.01 startups for 1 million inhabitants. Regarding only the sheer number of startups in a country, Ireland is in the middle of the chart with its 279 startups with profiles on Angel List.

The big surprise of this chart on startup density is definitely Estonia. With its 110.45 startups per million of inhabitants, the small country is the lynx of European startup ecosystems.
